How to measure voltage on ram slot

Each mainboard runs different types of ram, the mainboard line using chipset 845 – 915 usually uses DDR 1 ram (there are also Chinese mainboards that use 915 chipset but still run DDR2 ram), chipset lines from 945 and above use DDR2 ram. Using DDR 2 ram, main lines using G41 chipset use DDR 3 ram (some G41 mains still use DDR2). And currently the most common in repair is DDR 2 ram.

For convenience in repairing the computer mainboard, I show you how to measure the voltage on the ram slot in the fastest and easiest way to remember. Because on the ram slot there are many input voltage sources (vcc) each person has his own way of measuring, and this is his way.

+ For DDR1 ram: Ram DDR1 has bus 133-400, has 184 pins and voltage (vcc) on ddr1 is 2.5V. On ram slot ddr1 there are voltage pins such as: pins 7, 15, 22, 30, 38, 46…184. And my measurement is to measure pin number 184, the last pin of ram slot ddr1. If there is 2.5v then the ram voltage source is already there.

You notice the short and long slot compared to the anti-reverse mount, pin 184 is on the short side of the slot and is on the other side with pin 1, usually on the ram slot with pins 1, 92, 93 and 184.

+ For ram DDR 2: Ram DDR 2 has ram bus 533, 667, 800, 1066. The supply voltage for ram 2 is 1.8v, this ram has 240 pins (pins) and also has voltage level pins like : pins 51, 54, 170, 173, 236…

For DDR 2 ram it is very easy to remember. Look closely at the short slit and the long slit. You measure on pin number 184 next to the anti-reverse mount on the long slot (located on the left hand side) If there is a voltage of 1.8v, the power supply for the ram is ok. Or you can measure pins 236, counting from pins 240 and back is ok.

+ For DDR 3 ram:   DDR3 ram has bus from 1066, 1333, 1600. This ram also has 240 pins like ram 2 but the voltage supplied to this ram is only 1.5v and also has a lot of voltage level pins.

With this ram, you look at the long slot, 1 foot from the anti-reverse mount, and then measure. Here, my measurement is to measure on pin 170 of the ram slot (located on the right hand side, long slot). If the measurement has enough voltage of 1.5v, the voltage source for the ram is already good.

Above is how to measure ram slot voltage ddr1, 2, 3 that I often use, you should pay attention to know which direction pin 1 is located, because there are some mains with long slots on the left, main there is a long slit on the right. Just measure like the 3 pictures above and it’s ok. Wishing you success.
