Hi guys
Currently, with increasingly advanced technology, CPUs and motherboards often require ECC ram, not normal ram. Some socket 1150 mainboards for small servers for net shops require ram to run ECC ram. And this often makes it difficult for buyers, because they often buy the wrong ECC Reg ram and the machine does not run, thinking that the mainboard is faulty, which takes time and effort. I have encountered this many times. Now, I show you how to distinguish the simplest ram ECC Registered and Unbuffered that I often distinguish.
Introduction about ECC ram : ECC ram is an acronym Error Checking and Correction this is ram capable of checking and correcting errors for each individual bit in 1 byte of 8 bits allowing timely detection and correction of errors when it occurs go out.
Ram ECC Unbuffered ( UDIMMs ): Memory access instructions for ECC unbuffered memory are directly between the memory controller block and the memory module. Most of these ram can be mounted on normal PC mainboards.
Ram ECC Registered (RDIMMs): For ECC registered memory, access instructions are first sent to the register chip and then sent to the memory modules. This ram only runs on servers whose CPU requires ram reg.
There are two simple ways to distinguish ram UDIMMs and RDIMMs:
+ Method 1: Look on the Ram with the serial number, number the serial number on google search engine to find Ram’s information. Here, for example, I find a ram with serial number MT18KSF51272PZ-1G4K1HF, with complete information this is Micron’s ram, 1333 bus DDR3 ram, 4G capacity and this is ECC Registered ram as shown below.
In the picture above, the DDR 3 ram stick has only 8 chips on one side while the ECC ram has 9 chips.
+ The simplest way to distinguish is to look at the text behind the bandwidth of the ram, like the ecc ram on 10600E, it’s the normal ecc ram, and the last ram that records the bandwidth of 10600R is ram reg. Just look at the letter E, the letter R to know what ram. Calculate bus for ram, take 10600: 8 ~ 1333
+ How to distinguish ECC Registered and Unbuffered ram: ECC Unbuffered ram has 9 chips on each side, and for ram Registered, there is an additional 10 registered chip on the front, while the back still has 9 chips like ram. ecc unbuff… Easier to understand, ram reg has 10 chips on the front.
That’s a simple distinction, hopefully it will make it easier for you to find and buy ECC ram for your server. Have fun.
